 | WOMENS WAR MEMORIAL |
Thanks to Liz in New York, Pam in Kansas and other members who have been passing on the news, we bring you information about the new Womens War Memorial to be unveiled by the Queen on July 9th.
An open competition held to choose the sculptor was won by John Mills, from Hertfordshire. The memorial depicts the contribution of all women to the war effort through their clothing symbolically left hanging on pegs after they had returned home at the end of hostilities with their job well done. It will bear the inscription “The Women of World War II” A plaque will read: “This memorial was raised to commemorate the vital work done by over seven million women during World War II”.
The monument to the Women of World War II is cast in bronze and will occupy a central site in Whitehall near the entrance to the Cabinet Office. Many more details can be found at www.womenswarmemorial.org
