CHRISTMAS IN BRITAIN:

CHRISTMAS TREES
tree

The Christian symbolism of the Christmas Tree requires that it be an evergreen tree, representing the everlasting life that Christ brings, and be decorated with lights, representing Christ, the Light of the World.

The custom of bringing fir trees inside for Christmas goes back to 16th century Germany and came to England first with the German King George I.

In 1841, Queen Victoria's German husband Prince Albert put a Christmas Tree in Windsor Castle and decorated it with candles. The Christmas Tree gained widespread popularity in the mid 19th century, as British citizens tried to be just like Victoria and Albert. Decorating with toys and baubles became the fashion of the day.

Since 1947, Norway has annually presented Britain with a large Christmas Tree which stands in Trafalgar Square in commemoration of Anglo-Norwegian cooperation during the 2nd World War.
