During the war we gathered at the house of my grandfather and grandmother. It was a large family and Christmas Dinner was held in a room which held all of us at the table. My grandfather carved the turkey and the traditional meal included the Christmas pudding for dessert. In the Christmas pudding were tiny silver threepeny bits and little silver charms. We were warned that there would be something good in our pudding, and my grandmother would make sure that I had a special silver charm in my piece. Sometimes the party was so large that we had a separate table for the children. And of course everyone had a Christmas cracker to pull. In those days there were really good prizes in the crackers, little rings, games and other surprises. On Christmas Eve, the older children went with the family to Midnight Mass. This was when we had to walk to the church in Golders Green in Northwest London. These were wonderful Christmas memories for me. Patricia, from Elizabethan chapter. ©2000-2004 DBE in Louisiana, Inc.
