Boxing Day - December 26th - Feast of St. Stephen - is a holiday unique to the UK. Traditionally, this was the day when alms boxes at churches were opened, and their contents distributed to the poor. Also servants who had worked for their master's family on Christmas Day were given the day off to spend with their own family. ![]() This tradition survives in the custom of giving "Christmas boxes" (tips) to milkmen, postmen, dustmen, and other service-givers at Christmas. Modern Boxing Day is a day for families to spend time with inlaws or other family who didn't join them for Christmas Day. ©2000-2004 DBE in Louisiana, Inc. All rights reserved. Questions/Comments?
