Christmas Pudding - or "Plum Pudding" has its origins in a 14th century "porridge" called frumenty, made by boiling beef and mutton with raisins, currants, prunes, wines and spices. By 1595 frumenty was evolving into plum pudding, with the addition of eggs, breadcrumbs, ale and spirits. ![]() It was George I who so enjoyed plum pudding that he reestablished it as part of Christmas festivities in 1714. By Victorian times, plum pudding looked more like it does today. ![]() PUDDING SUPERSTITIONS . . . Pudding should be made by the 25th Sunday after Trinity. Pudding should include 13 ingredients, representing Christ and His Disciples. Every member of the family should take a turn stirring the pudding with a wooden spoon - from east to west, in honor of the Three Kings. Putting a silver coin in the pudding brings health, wealth and happiness to the person who finds it. Rings mean marriage. Thimbles and buttons predict that the finder will remain spinsters and bachelors. ![]() ©2000-2004 DBE in Louisiana, Inc. All rights reserved. Questions/Comments?
