Big Ben

Sue, from Excalibur Chapter in Southern California, was camping in Kings Canyon National Park last week with her husband and friends. On learning of the terrible news on September 11th, she put her feelings into a poem . . .

King’s Canyon Campsite, September 11, 2001

That black day in history, September Eleven,
Marked a juxtaposition ‘twixt Hell and Heaven…

The Hell we learned from a TV screen –
The horror, the slaughter, an obscene dream.

Yet Heaven was here, in John Muir’s retreat,
Tall trees, starlit skies, days blissfully sweet.

Along pristine trails we absorbed the shock
That such heinous acts this Nation could rock.

In a single hour the U.S. was changed
A vulnerable victim of minds deranged.

The loss of life was too much to bear
Mass outrage sent shockwaves through the air.

With rhetoric strong, revenge must be sought,
While a people mourn, justice shall be wrought.

Leaders assure us that life will go on
And here we’re inspired by a man called John.

Like these ancient forests, Mankind will endure
Thanks to faith and vision of men like John Muir.
