![]() ![]() The garden features the use of Scottish stone and gilded obelisks representing the English rose, the Scottish thistle, the Welsh daffodil and the N. Irish flax. In April this year, HRH Princess Anne presented New York City with seeds from Hampton Court Palace that will be grown in the garden. ![]() The design also includes City of London-style bollards featuring Society shields. This is where DBE would like to be included. We would like the DBE insignia to go on one of the bollards, which we are told will cost $11,000. LOUISIANA DBE discussed this issue at their last Board meeting, and set a $500 goal for a Louisiana donation. We are holding raffles at each Board meeting, and putting collection baskets out at all our social events, and at our Pub Night in the fall. Louisiana DBEs challenge all other states to set a goal. Let's rally round and get that bollard put up! Set a goal appropriate for the size of your state membership. It would only take an average of $300+ per state to raise $11,000! If any non-DBE members would like to donate to the DBE effort, please e-mail me. BEFORE . . . On July 2, DBE Eastern District Organizer Ruth attended the Royal Marine Band Concert in Hanover Square, the future site of the British Memorial Garden, and sent these photos of the site. Ruth writes ... "The concert was very well attended by New York business people just enjoying their lunch hour. As the Garden will be 'on the corner' of Wall Street, it will be well used during the fine weather. At present it is a paved triangle of land about the size of a small London Square or garden with many wooden benches. One end is India House, which is having a face lift, and down one side is a restaurant and a very nice apartment building. The other side is the road. Many of the buildings in this area have quite a British history. In 1725 New York's first newspaper was published here, the New York Gazette. Later James Rivington, during the American Revolution, published a loyalist newspaper, Rivington's Royal Gazette." ![]() Next year, I hope to show you the "AFTER" photos. BREAKING NEWS . . . Just heard from Queen Alexandra chapter in California . . . they have raised $100 for the bollard. Kensington Palace chapter in North Carolina e-mailed me to say they were sending $50 to the Fund. Heritage chapter in Northern California have donated $25 to the Fund. Lady Nancy Astor chapter in Kansas have raised $40 so far, and are still going! King Edward VII Chapter in New York have pledged $500. What a wonderful gesture from a single chapter!! Way to go, and congratulations, all!! A cool way to support the Memorial Garden Fund: Magna Carta chapter in Kansas is holding a raffle for a Basket of British goodies, including china, clotted cream, tea, gooseberry preserves, scone mix, Cadburys, and many other good things. For more information e-mail KansasStateDBE@aol.com Here in Louisiana, we are gradually raising the $500 we pledged. We have 'passed the hat' at several social events (especially the ones including husbands!) We are holding a raffle at every State Board meeting. Last month, Chaucer chapter showed the movie "Calendar Girls" - with the proceeds earmarked for the Fund, and this month, we are showing "Saving Grace." ©1999-2004 DBE in Louisiana, Inc.
