Heard how the red London double decker bus has gone the way of the dinosaur?

No more "Transport of Delight?"   Don't believe it!   Let's get the story straight.

On December 9, 2005, the 50-year old red double decker bus, the "Routemaster" drove its last route. This was the old kind of hop-on, hop-off double decker, with the open entrance platform at the back in addition to the front door. They are being replaced by new double decker buses with one driver and one entrance, or the articulated "bendy" buses - hinged single-deckers that can carry far more passengers, each of them buying tickets in advance from street machines.

Thanks to John, a UK reader of the site, for putting me on to this story. He sent me a great link to some BBC photos of the beloved buses:
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/shared/spl/hi/picture_gallery/05/uk_routemaster_retrospective/html/1.stm

There's also a wonderful Guardian article reflecting on the wonders of the Routemaster bus at http://www.guardian.co.uk/transport/Story/0,2763,790041,00.html

For those of you who mourn the passing of the bus, and have fond memories of hopping on and hopping off, there will be a handful of them on "heritage routes" for tourists.
