THE ENGLISH TEA ROOM

Covington Tea Room
734 Rutland St.
Covington LA 70433
Tel. 985-898-3988

The Covington Tea Room includes three different rooms: the main Tea Room, the Windsor Room for special events, and a third room, decorated with a more masculine decor. In "The Pantry," you can purchase T-shirts and mugs proclaiming that "Real Men Drink Tea."

The Tea room also offers a Tea Garden and China Shop and soon hope to include a Bed and Breakfast.

The Tea Room is run by Brits Stephen and Nicky Thomson, who have diverse and cosmopolitan backgrounds. Nicky comes from Kent, and has spent many years as an artist, so contributes her creative eye. Stephen was born in Uganda (his parents were missionaries) and then brought up in Surrey from the age of ten. For the past decade, he has been dealing in antiques, which shows in the old English ambience he has created in the Tea Room.

Be sure to chat with Nicky, who can tell you all you ever wanted to know about tea. She has trained and continues to stay current with the latest developments in the tea industry. She can tell you about the different kinds of teas they serve, black teas, flavored teas, herbal infusions and organics. She knows the background of each one, how to brew them, and their health benefits. She can tell you about the current trends in tea drinking, such as chai, the S. African rooibus, and the rare white teas. As Nicky will tell you:

"Coffee is a quick fix.
Tea is an experience."

The complete experience is what you will find at The English Tea Room. You can try their full Windsor Tea, including fresh fruit, scones (with clotted cream, lemon curd and blackcurrant jam), tea sandwiches and other savories, and small sweets - cakes, tarts and chocolate covered strawberries. If you want something less, you can order tea and cake, or tea and scones, or tea and crumpets, or simply a smaller afternoon tea. And you can purchase British groceries and frozen foods from "The Pantry" and also tea inspired candles, body lotions and body washes.

Looking for a location for a special event? You can hold your shower, children's birthday party or other event at the English Tea Room. They offer charming "Mad Hatters Tea Parties" and "Princess Parties", perfect for little girls' birthdays. Once a month, Nicky holds "Tea 101" when she serves tea and scones while she teaches about tea preparation, tea etiquette and other tea background.

Go to their website and sign up for the newsletter to keep up with future developments. I was made to feel very special when I visited the Tea Room. You will be treated royally when you go, too. I highly recommend it.
