FINN McCOOLS

In a quiet section of midcity, on a very ordinary street of neat wooden residences interspersed with businesses, is a plain wooden building with a satellite dish interrupting the roof line. Only the colorful red pub sign hanging out front tells you that this is Finn McCools. Just a block away from the Mona's Restaurant, this Irish pub is run by owners Stephen and Pauline Patterson and Stephen Collins, all from Belfast, Northern Ireland.

I visited Finn McCools recently, and was impressed by the friendliness of the place. Everyone is made to feel welcome, and owner Stephen Patterson is a very genial host. Stephen and his wife Pauline opened Finn McCools 2 1/2 years ago. Stephen describes it as "an Irish pub run by Irish people." This is the only place in the city that shows British soccer matches live (hence the satellite dish!)

The Pub is open daily from 11 a.m. (and from 9 a.m. on weekends when soccer matches are being shown, because of the time difference.) Stephen told me that lots of English, Scots and Irishmen come to watch the soccer, but even though they are cheering for different teams, there is always a friendly atmosphere (unlike some of the soccer matches in the UK.)

Pub Quiz is on Mondays and a Darts league on Tuesdays. The jukebox plays lots of British and Irish CDs. Many British drinks are served, including Guinness, Newcastle Brown, Harp lager, cider - and in "imperial" pints, not American pints (so they are 25% larger.)

They do not serve food yet, but they are having the kitchens updated to be able to do so. Hopefully, food will be available by Christmas, with Irish stew, Shepherds Pie, Fish and Chips and other pub food on the menu.

For more information, find them on the web at www.finnmccools.com and sign up for the weekly e-mail schedule of events. Look at some of the photos on the site, and you'll see what fun they have!
