Edinburgh
Reader Lillian would like to encourage everyone to visit her home town of Edinburgh.

Lillian writes . . .
I don't know if anyone has told you about Edinburgh, but it is a wonderful
city. It is the capital of Scotland, and I come from a little town
twenty minutes from there called Haddington, where John Knox was born.
Edinburgh is full of history, and so close to the Borders area that
you could take day trips to almost anything you could wish for: hills,
historical sites, beautiful countryside, the Firth of Forth and the
famous Forth railway bridge, castles, the sites of famous battles,
the ruined fortress on the Bass, bird sanctuaries or the butterfly
farm, see golden eagles flying free in our beautiful clear air. I
could go on and on.
If you go in August, you have the chance to see the famous Edinburgh
Military Tattoo which is put on every year. It is held on the castle
esplanade, and has Edinburgh Castle as a back drop. At the close of
the Tattoo a lone piper plays a lament high up on the castle battlements.
Lilian continues . . .
Some of the hotels in Edinburgh can be highly priced, but step out
of any of them on Princes Street, the Haymarket or Waverly Steps and
you are straight into the city.
An alternative is to stay in one of the smaller towns outside Edinburgh.
There are a lot of them such as Haddington, Dunbar or North Berwick
which all have smaller hotels but are only 30 minutes from Edinburgh,
and have a lot to offer especially in the way of history, golf or
water sports.
As Lillian says: "Enjoy my city, she is in a class of her own."
