Tea at Claridges

Reader Karen wrote to me about her very positive experience having Afternoon Tea at Claridges:

Claridges

Karen writes . . .

"My experience was wonderful! I was on my way to a business appointment at Marylebone, and stopped in at Claridges that morning to make reservations for afternoon tea. "Yes, Madam, your table will be ready."

So after a great interview and successful business meeting, I was ready for a treat. I walked in (still had on my navy blue business suit) and waited patiently for the maitre D. I told him that I had reservations for one for tea. "Yes, Madam, right this way. Would this table be acceptable to madam?" I said, "Sir, I think madam would prefer to sit on that comfortable sofa over there, it's been a very long day."

I was served gracefully and the champagne was some of the best. The Earl Grey tea was of superb quality.

I decided to enter the Ladies Lounge. In one area there were several very nicely lighted vanities, and another area with very large hand sinks. An attendant there was standing ready. The sinks were filled with water. So, the protocol is that you wash your hands in the filled sink. The attendant then hands you a hand towel to dry. You return the towel to her. Your hands never touch the faucet! Of course a tip is in order!"
