Gravetye Manor, East Grinstead
Thanks to Elizabethan member Hilary for recommending this luxurious historical manor house.

Gravetye Manor, an Elizabethan stone mansion was built in 1598, and has a history as a hideout for smugglers. The Manor is proudly a member of "Relais et Chateaux," the association promoting hotels of excellence, situated in areas of rural peace and beauty and personally supervised by their owners.

William Robinson, one of the greatest gardeners of all time, bought the manor and lived in it from 1884 till his death in 1935. It was here that he realised many of his ideas for the creation of the English natural garden, of which he was the pioneer.
The bedrooms are named after trees on the estate instead of being numbered. Although there is a modern central heating system, the wood fires still burn fragrantly in all the public rooms. You may visit Gravetye to stay for a few days, or simply to visit their renowned restaurant.
All this is only 35 miles from Hyde Park, and 12 miles south of Gatwick Airport . . .

Gravetye is the perfect central location to visit many historic houses, gardens and other points of interest. Glyndebourne is 35 minutes drive away. There is the Bluebell steam railway nearby, aptly names at Bluebell time. Fans of Winnie the Pooh can take Pooh Bear walks on the Ashdown Forest, and play Pooh sticks at Pooh Bridge, only 7 miles away. Chartwell House is 24 miles, The Royal Pavilion in Brighton 30 miles, Hever Castle 18 miles and Arundel Castle 36 miles.
