Bell Inn, Burwash, Sussex

Lesley, a member of Nightingale chapter in Texas writes:

My favorite spot, and would be for all Kipling fans, is Burwash in Sussex.  His home is there, intact with the blotting paper he used.  Also the church and other places which come into the Puck of Pooks Hill stories.  I would recommend the Bell Inn, remodeled in the 1500s!   A charming place.  The village was Best in England a while back.

Burwash The origins of this delightful village date back to Norman times, when the manor was given to the Count of Eu by William the Conqueror in recognition of his services in battle.   To learn more about the village, go to the 'villagenet' site of Burwash.

Kipling lived at Batemans from 1902 till his death in 1936.  Batemans is now a National Trust property open from Easter to October and is well worth a visit, with its small mill and unique water powered turbine. Batemans
